Question 1

Where in the Maldives can you photograph a wedding?

Accepted Answer

Across the atolls — private island resorts in North and South Malé, Baa, Raa, Ari and Noonu, and the more remote southern atolls reached by seaplane. The frames people come for are the ones that only exist here: an overwater villa deck at first light, a bare sandbank at low tide with nothing in the picture but two people and the horizon, a jetty walk at sunset, a lagoon shoot in the water. I work wherever your resort is rather than from a fixed base, and I plan the day around the tide and the light rather than the other way round — sandbanks appear and disappear, and a late-afternoon dhoni ride is usually the best half hour of the day.

Question 2

Is a wedding in the Maldives legally binding?

Accepted Answer

No. Foreign couples cannot legally marry in the Maldives, so every resort ceremony is symbolic — beautiful, fully staged, and with no legal weight. Almost everyone handles the paperwork at home, either a short registry appointment before they fly or one after they get back, and treats the Maldives day as the real wedding. It makes no difference to the photography, and in practice it makes the day easier: no officiant timings, no signing table, no registrar's schedule to shoot around. If you are having a vow renewal or an elopement, the same applies.

Question 3

When is the best time of year for a Maldives wedding shoot?

Accepted Answer

November to April is the dry season, and December to March is the most reliable stretch — clear skies, calm lagoons, and the light that makes the water read turquoise rather than grey. April to May and October to November are shoulder months: slightly less settled, noticeably cheaper, and often still excellent. May to October is the wet season, with lower rates and short, heavy afternoon showers that usually pass in an hour; I have shot some of my favourite skies in it. Whatever the month, I schedule the main portraits for the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset, because the middle of a Maldivian day is hard, flat light.

Question 4

Can I bring my own photographer, and how far ahead should I book?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Resorts accept outside photographers, who arrive as ordinary guests; some charge a modest external vendor fee, so it is worth asking your wedding coordinator when you book the villa. Plan for three to six months ahead for peak season, more if your date falls over Christmas or New Year, since the transfer — seaplane or speedboat depending on the atoll — has to be booked alongside the room and seaplanes stop flying at dusk. I usually arrive the day before so nothing depends on a delayed transfer. If you want aerials, tell me early: drone flights in the Maldives need clearance from both the National Defence Force and the Civil Aviation Authority as well as the resort's own permission, and that is not something to arrange in the week of the wedding.
