I photograph private celebrations in Dubai — engagement parties, henna nights, welcome dinners, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and the kind of evening a family puts together in a villa or a private room and wants remembered properly. Fourteen years, three hundred and counting, and a portfolio that runs from COP28 and the Museum of the Future to a wedding in Provence. But most of the work I care about looks like this: a room full of people who know each other, one evening, no second take. I work quietly. No posing the room, no interrupting a speech, no flash in anyone’s face during dinner. You get the evening as it happened, not a version of it staged for the camera.

What I photograph

Engagement parties and pre-wedding celebrations

Engagement parties, henna and mehndi nights, welcome dinners, sangeets, rehearsal dinners. These are usually the most photogenic evenings of a wedding week and the ones most often left uncovered because everyone is thinking about the wedding day. They deserve the same treatment.

Milestone birthdays and anniversaries

Fortieths, fiftieths, sixtieths, silver and golden anniversaries. Often three generations in one room, which means the family portraits matter as much as the party — and I will make sure they happen early, before the room loosens up and before anyone has left.

Private villa, desert and yacht celebrations

Villas in Emirates Hills, Al Barari and Jumeirah. Desert camps out towards Al Marmoom and the Al Qudra lakes. Yachts out of Dubai Harbour. These all have the same characteristic: the light is beautiful for about forty minutes and then it is gone entirely and you are shooting by whatever is on the wall. That is a lighting problem, and it is the one I am hired to solve.

Proposals

Photographed from a distance so the moment stays yours, then a short portrait session afterwards once you have both stopped shaking. Usually 45 minutes end to end.

How an evening actually runs

I arrive about an hour before guests do, walk the space, and work out where the light is and where it will not be in two hours. If there are speeches, a cake, a first dance or a family portrait to organise, we agree the running order before anyone arrives — those are the frames that cannot be re-shot. Through the evening I stay out of the way. Guests, details, the room filling up, the moment someone’s mother realises what has been arranged. Family formals, if you want them, take about 15-30 minutes and I will pull people together myself rather than making you do it. I shoot in low light without a flash wherever the room allows it, because a flash in a private celebration changes the atmosphere it is supposed to be recording. When a room genuinely will not give me enough light, I light it discreetly and off to the side.

Where I shoot in Dubai

Private villas across Emirates Hills, Al Barari, Jumeirah and the Palm. Hotel private dining rooms and ballrooms across DIFC, Downtown, Madinat Jumeirah and Bulgari Resort. Desert camps and majlis setups towards Al Marmoom. Yachts and beach clubs at Dubai Harbour and Bluewaters. Outside Dubai: Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah and the wider UAE regularly, and internationally on request — a good part of my year is spent photographing celebrations in Europe, the Caribbean and North Africa. Most hotels and venues in Dubai require a photographer to be declared in advance, and some charge an external supplier fee. Tell me the venue when you enquire and I will tell you what is involved — I have almost certainly shot there.

What you receive, and when

  • 10-30 previews the same night — a small set ready to send or post before anyone has gone to bed.
  • 100 to 250 edited images from a full evening, colour and black-and-white, high resolution, no watermarks.
  • Full gallery within 2 working days, delivered through a private online gallery you can share with guests.
  • Full personal usage rights. Print what you like, at whatever size you like, with no per-print charge.
  • Raw files are not delivered. The edit is the work.

Photographing a corporate event instead?

Conferences, summits, trade shows, brand activations, product launches and corporate galas are a different job — accreditation, media schedules, multi-photographer coverage, same-hour delivery to a PR team, and per-day rather than per-evening pricing.

Most private evenings run 1 to 8 hours of coverage. I arrive 60 minutes before your guests so the empty room, the table settings and the details are photographed while they are still perfect, and I stay through the parts that cannot be repeated – the speeches, the cake, the first dance, the moment the guest of honour walks in. Shorter coverage works for a proposal or a small dinner; longer coverage suits a henna night or a party that genuinely runs late.

Usually, yes. Most Dubai hotels and venues want an external photographer declared in advance, and a few charge a supplier fee or require insurance documents on file. It is rarely a problem, but it is the kind of thing that becomes one at 6pm on the evening itself. Tell me the venue when you enquire – I have almost certainly worked there – and I will tell you what they ask for and deal with it directly so you are not chasing paperwork in the week of your own party.

Carefully, and without you having to police it. Tell me before the evening who or which part of the room is not to be photographed – a ladies-only section, particular family members, guests who would simply rather not – and I will work around it. Those frames are not taken rather than taken and deleted later. If a section of the evening is closed to me entirely, I photograph the rest and rejoin when you say so. Galleries are private and password-protected, and nothing from a private event is published anywhere without your explicit permission.

They are often the most visually rich part of a wedding week and the most frequently left uncovered, because everyone’s attention is on the wedding day itself. They can be booked on their own or added to wedding coverage, and if I am already photographing your wedding it is simpler and cheaper to combine them.
